Swimmers return with a haul of medals – and speeding tickets!
Swimmers from Ashbourne & District Swimming Club put in a great performance at the recent Melton Mowbray Open Meet. The annual outing resulted in an overall position of third for the club from a total of 10 competing teams. Swimmers returned home with a total of eleven first places.
Jonny Riley, 14, put in several outstanding performances. He swam in five events during the day and can home with four firsts (100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 50m fly and 100m individual medley). With tough competition he gained third place in the 100m freestyle.
Club Captain Kirsty Durose also put in a strong performance returning home with two firsts (100m freestyle and 100m individual medley). She also gained second place in 100m breaststroke and her time of 1.14.03 for 100m backstroke gained her a speeding ticket.
Not letting the side down, sister Heidi Durose led the way to victory in the 100m breaststroke.
Georgia Roberts did two fantastic swims which gained her a speeding ticket in the 50m backstroke with a time of 43.68 and a second place in the 50m breaststroke.
Also gaining a speeding ticket was Emily Bailey who put in an outstanding performance in the 50m fly with a time of 42.16. Her 50m backstroke also saw her gain first place and this was followed by fifth place in the 50m freestyle.
Victory was also enjoyed by Club Coach Sarah Brandrick who came home with first place in the 100m backstroke and 100m fly. She also walked away with second place in the 100m freestyle.
Boys Club Captain Tom Haswell also performed well and came away with a first place in the 100m breaststroke and a second place in the 100m freestyle.
Following in his brother’s footsteps Joe Haswell scoped four second places in the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley.
Jasmin Ford also put in a strong performance which resulted in second place in the 100m backstroke, third place in the 100m breaststroke, fourth place in the 100m freestyle, fifth place in the 100m individual medley and sixth place in the 100m fly.
Nicole Bailey achieved second place in the 100m fly, third place in the 100m backstroke, third place in the 100m individual medley and sixth place in the 100m freestyle.
Lydia Cox returned home with second place in the 50m backstroke, third place in the 100m individual medley, fourth place in the 50m freestyle and fifth place in the 50m fly.
Third place was gained by Robert Wheeler in the 50m fly and this was followed by fourth place in the 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley.
Jacob Holmes showed true fighting spirit which allowed him to achieve personal bests in all his events; 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m individual medley and 100 freestyle in which he achieved a time of 1.13.56.
Paul Heaney finished the day with a third place in the 100m breaststroke. He also put in a strong performance in the 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
Rebecca Wright also achieved several personal best times in the 100m backstroke, 50m fly, 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley.
This was the first time at Melton Mowbray for Harriet Wheeler who put in an amazing performance and swam her way to seventh place in the 50m freestyle and she also put in a strong performance in the 50m freestyle.
Swimmers and parents from Ashbourne Swimming Club attended the annual Club Presentation Disco following the recent Club Championships. A record number of 80 swimmers from across all age groups, from 7 years of age to adult masters swimmers, participated in the event which was run across three evenings at Ashbourne Leisure Centre. All coaches and teachers at the club were delighted with the progress made by the swimmers. Results
The club now looks forward to a short break over Christmas followed by a busy couple of months of training and competition with the Long Eaton and Melton Mowbray Open Meets in February and the Derbyshire County Championships over 3 weekends in March. A total of 19 swimmers from Ashbourne Swimming Club took their annual trip to the 50m Ponds Forge pool in Sheffield for the Derbyshire County 50m Sprint Competition and returned with a total of 3 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 3 bronze medals and with top 10 positions in 27 of the events. Six swimmers returned home with the medals - the widest spread of medals achieved by swimmers from the club at the County Championships for many years In her first Derbyshire County 50m Sprint Competition, Emily Bailey won silver in 50m butterfly, bronze in 50m backstroke, 5th in 50m freestyle and 13th in 50m breaststroke. Club Captain, Kirsty Durose won gold in 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly and silver in 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke. Her sister, Heidi Durose, continued the family winning form to win silver in 50m breaststroke. Nicole Bailey came in the top 10 in all her events, with a silver medal in 50m backstroke, 5th in butterfly and 9th in 50m freestyle. Jasmin Ford won her first county medal with bronze in 50m backstroke, 7th in 50m freestyle and 12th in 50m butterfly. Alice Bancroft achieved her first top 6 position with 5th in 50m backstroke. In a strong field, Callum Broom returned with gold in 50m fly, silver in 50m freestyle and backstroke and 5th in 50m breaststroke. After several weeks out of training, Caspar Tynan put in excellent performances to finish in the top 5 in 3 of his events with 4th in 50m butterfly and freestyle and 5th in 50m backstroke. Newly appointed boys Club Captain, Tom Haswell, came home with 10th in both 50m freestyle and breaststroke. Joe Haswell also finished in the top 10 in 50m freestyle (8th) and breaststroke (9th) and Jonny Riley finished 10th in 50m backstroke. Press Release Four Towns Gala Saturday, 27 September 2008 Swimmers from Ashbourne Swimming Club completed against Dove Valley, Leek and Belper Marlins in round 4 of the Four Towns league on Saturday, 27 September 2008. Ashbourne SC came 2nd overall with Dove Valley in 1st place, Leek in 3rd and Belper Marlins in 4th. From a total of 44 races, Ashbourne were in the top 2 for 18 of the events. Finishing in first place were Georgia Roberts (50 breaststroke), Joe Haswell (50 freestyle), William Ripley (50 breaststroke), Lydia Cox (50 breaststroke), Amy Poynton (50 freestyle), Nicole Bailey (50 backstroke), Kirsty Durose (50 butterfly), Helen Armstrong (50 breaststroke), Robert Wheeler (50m butterfly and Jonny Riley (50 freestyle) along with the 14yrs & under and Open mixed freestyle relays. Close behind in 2nd position were Tom Gadsby (50 butterfly), Harriet Wheeler (50 backstroke), Jasmin Ford (50 butterfly), Tom Haswell (50 backstroke), Rebecca Wright (50 freestyle) and the 14yrs & under medley relay team. This series of galas is graded with cut-off times in all the individual events. 5 swimmers greatly improved on their previous swims to swim faster than these times: Jonny Riley (50 backstroke in 36.38 secs), Caspar Tynan (50 butterfly in 37.50 secs and 50 backstroke in 39.94 secs), Paul Heaney (50 breaststroke in 40.64 secs), Lydia Cox (25m butterfly in 18.48) and Tom Haswell (50 breaststroke in 36.18). For a few swimmers, this was the first time they had represented the club in a competition: Eloise Page, Kira Watson, Elise Heaney, Amelia Brennan and Holly Brennan. Other swimmers competing were: Mark Limer, Toby Doran, Max Watson, Emily Bailey, Alex Gould, Rebecca Clewes, Thomas Simpson-Allsop, Matthew Watson, Sacha Doran, Nicola Wetton, Libby Ford, Jacob Holmes, Rachel Ripley, Callum Broom and Lizzie Wheeler, As there were only 4 teams competing in this gala, there was a spare lane available for Ashbourne swimmers and the team took advantage of this opportunity and also competed in the second lane in the majority of races. Swimmers in both lanes put in superb performances and showed real progress in their development of skills necessary for competition swimming. Ashbourne Swimming Club Frank Wright Trophy Gala Swimmers from Ashbourne SC, City of Derby, Etwall Eagles and Derby Phoenix, joined together for the annual Frank Wright Trophy Gala, the event was held at Ashbourne Leisure Centre Saturday 17 May 2008. The teams were neck and neck throughout the evening with Ashbourne’s two teams Sharks and Dolphins both putting in good performances. Swimming for the Ashbourne Sharks, Casper Tynan put in a strong performance with a 1st for the boys 10yrs and under 50m Freestyle and 1st 25m Butterfly. Kirsty Durose held her own against tough competition gaining a 1st for the 50m Butterfly and a 2nd for the 50m Freestyle in the girls open. Jasmin Ford had an excellent evening with 3 personal best times, 1st for 50m Freestyle, 2nd in 50m Backstroke, and 3rd in 50m Butterfly all in the 14yrs and under girl’s event. Heidi Durose gained 1st in the girls open breaststroke 50m, with Joe Haswell gaining a 1st in the 50m Freestyle boys. Swimming for the Ashbourne Dolphins was Libby Ford with a personal best time gaining a 3rd in the girls 12yrs and under 50m Freestyle along with Emily Bailey who gain a 3rd in the girls 10yrs and under 25m Butterfly. Nicola Wetton also gained a 3rd in the girls 12yrs and under backstroke. Press Release Swimmers from Ashbourne Swimming Club put in strong performances at the Derbyshire County Championships. The competition was held over 3 weekends throughout the month of March 2008. The events were held at Eckington, Sharley Park - Clay Cross and Queens Leisure Centre, Derby. Coach Sarah Brandrick took 15 swimmers to participate in the competition, with strong performances from swimmers across the board. Club Captain, Kirsty Durose led the way, finishing in the top 4 for all 6 of her events, with gold in 50m butterfly, silver in 50m freestyle, 100m individual medley and 50m breaststroke, bronze in 100m breaststroke and 4th in 100m freestyle. Lizzie Wheeler came away with a 4th and 6th Position in the 200m and 50m freestyle respectively and Heidi Durose won a bronze medal with a strong performance in the 100m breaststroke. Paul Heaney swam a total of 9 events over the course of the 3 weekends with significant improvements seen in his swim times, particularly in the 200m breaststroke where he came 7th overall. Other swimmers finishing in the top 10 were Jasmin Ford, Joe Haswell, Nicole Bailey, Caspar Tynan and Robert Wheeler. Caspar was just outside of the medal positions with 4th in 50m butterfly, 6th in 50m freestyle and 7th in 200m freestyle. Also competing in the championships were Emily Bailey, Lydia Cox, Amy Poynton, Jonny Riley, William Ripley and Georgia Roberts. All swimmers put in strong performances, with many achieving personal bests. Ashbourne Swimming Club member, Callum Broom, also competed at the Championships, representing City of Derby Swimming Club and took the gold medal in the highly competitive 50m freestyle. The swimmers at Ashbourne Swimming Club can be very proud of their achievements and look forward to improving throughout the year.

Swimmers from Ashbourne Swimming Club have put in strong performances at
three recent events – the Rykneld C Grade and Belper Marlin B Grade Open
Meets in October and the Derbyshire Long Course County Championships at
Ponds Forge, the 50m pool in Sheffield on 12 November. The Rykneld competition was the first open meet for three swimmers – Georgia Roberts, Nicola Wetton and Demi Buxton, who all performed well. Other swimmers participating in this event were Jessica Austin, Robert Wheeler, Stephanie Wetton, Ellen Roberts, Rachel Keeling and Jonny Riley with many of them smashing their previous personal best times. Jonny Riley came away with a silver medal in 100m backstroke, Robert Wheeler with bronze in 100m freestyle and Jessica Audit with a bronze in 100m breaststroke.
